BRATISLAVA – Slovak football representative Matúš Ber was convinced by the offer of the German Bochum, because he was considered number one for the position of midfielder.
This is also why he decided to change after five years in the Dutch Vitesse Arnhem, he said in an interview with the futbalsfz.sk portal. The 27-year-old midfielder ended his cooperation with Vitesse in June, where he had been working since the 2018/2019 season. He played 172 games for the Dutch club, in which he scored 27 goals and added 20 assists.
In the final year of his time in the Netherlands, he was the captain of the team. However, he did not agree on a new contract and headed a little further south to Bochum in the Bundesliga, with whom he signed a contract for three years.
We felt we needed a change
“The last season was really very difficult, I didn’t hide it. However, the problems that arose in the club were not the main reason for my decision to leave. Together with my wife, we felt that we needed a change. So the right time came to move to a better league, as my contract was coming to an end I was able to do that, for which we are both very grateful.
However, Vitesse will forever remain a part of my career and my heart because I spent five beautiful years there. Some of them were more difficult, others were great. We’ve had amazing success, so I’m grateful for every single season, whether it’s been better or worse. This work gave me a lot, now it’s time for something new,” said Bero.

By signing with Bochum, he fulfilled his wish to play in one of the top five leagues in Europe: “I see it very positively that I got the opportunity to be part of Bochum and play in the Bundesliga. It’s a huge challenge and I can’t wait to start. It will be something new, I have enthusiasm and expectations for what my tenure will bring and what it’s going to be like. I’m really looking forward to it and we’re going for it.”
I think both sides are now satisfied
Bero also had offers from other clubs, but the one from VfL was the biggest: “Ever since they found out that I was a free agent, they wanted me. It took a little while before we agreed on the terms, but in the end we came to an agreement, me to the club and the club to me. In my opinion, both parties are now satisfied. It’s just about making our cooperation work, getting used to the city, the fans, the mentality of the people as quickly as possible and then showing myself. I am grateful for that and it is a great honor for me that they cared about me so much.”
An old acquaintance is also waiting for him at the club – coach Thomas Letsch, who also managed him at Vitesse: “Of course I spoke to him. Practically even before there was interest from the club, because the coach knows me intimately. I had beautiful years with him at Vitesse. He explained to me how some things work and was of the opinion that the Bundesliga could fit me in. He also told me what I could excel at and what I could bring to the team.

I admit that the coach had a big part in my belief that Bochum was the right choice. As I mentioned before, the years I experienced under his leadership were beautiful for me and I consider him one of the best coaches I have ever had. I am very much looking forward to working together again and I believe that it will be successful again.”
After signing the contract, he will enjoy a vacation with his family. “I came home and finally a well-deserved vacation awaits me after the whole season. It was long, now it’s time to gather new strength, enjoy time with my family, with my parents, with my friends, with my wife, with my daughter. Simply, devote yourself to all of them , because during the season I don’t have so much time for vacation and rest,” he added for futbolsfz.sk.
