Jakarta – So far, Indonesian people know the figure of Captain Pattimura through the image of a man with a mustache holding a machete. But there is another version of the image of the figure Thomas Matulessi claimed to be authentic images.
The Matulessy family from Haruku Island, Maluku, claims to be the true heirs of the descendants of Kapitan Pattimura. They show a picture of the face of Kapitan Pattimura or Thomas Matulessy.
With the assistance of the Indonesian National Hero Family Association (IKPN), detik.com chat with representatives of the Matulessy family, his name is also Thomas Matulessy, Wednesday (6/7/2022).
Kapitan Pattimura’s figure is seen without a thick mustache. There is also no machete here. In fact, in the usual picture, Kapitan Pattimura has a thick mustache and holds a machete in his right hand.
“Thomas Matulessy’s real face is stored in Hulaliu Village,” said Thomas (65).

Different from the national historical record which states that Pattimura was born in Haria, Saparua Island, Thomas stated that Pattimura was born in Hulaliu, Haruku Island.
From the picture he showed, Thomas Matulessy looks like he has round cheekbones. He has short hair and a relatively wide forehead. This description is very different from the previously popular version, including the one listed on the Rp 1,000 bill. There is also a version of the mustachioed Pattimura who wields a machete with a shield (salawaku).

How come Thomas’s version is different?
“In 1951, the history team painted the face of Pattimura holding a machete and salawaku, while the face image stored on Hulalui (Haruku Island) is similar to the face painting (of) Ver Huell, the Dutch war captain,” said Thomas.
Quirijn Maurits Rudolph (QMR) Ver Huell was a Dutch soldier during Pattimura. He stated that Ver Huell had a picture of Pattimura’s face. As for the painting of Pattimura with the mustache, he said it was made after Indonesia’s independence.
detik.com see an excerpt from Des Alwi’s book, ‘The History of Maluku: Banda Naira, Ternate, Tidore, and Ambon’, a figure from LEKRA (Institute of People’s Culture) named Latuputi painted Pattimura in 1951.
