Mattie Valk (38) and Marieke Elsinga (37) remain a permanent duo at Qmusic. The two DJs, who have been successful with their morning show for five years, signed a multi-year contract with the radio station.
The radio duo will enter the sixth season of the morning show Mattie & Marieke next Monday. Qmusic is not sure how many years the DJs have added, but the duo will certainly be heard for another two years.
Every week, 1.7 million unique listeners tune in to Mattie & Marieke for at least five minutes. This makes it one of the best-listened-to morning shows in the country. Last year the program won the Gouden RadioRing.
The success is partly due to the different characters, thinks Marieke Elsinga. She talks about this in a double interview with Mattie Valk, which will appear on this site on Saturday morning. “Because we are opposites – Mattie is chaotic and a bit more conservative, I am quite structured and progressive – we are a good duo on the radio. Our contradictions create tension. After five years of making radio, we also know exactly where we have to pin to get each other on the closet.
The two had frequent contact during their summer break. “We send each other audio apps and photos, but I deliberately swallow some anecdotes because I want to hear his first reaction on the radio. That is sometimes difficult. I’m used to sharing everything with him,” she says.

Dropping
The sixth season kicks off on Monday with a drop. The DJs are dropped separately somewhere in the Netherlands at six o’clock in the morning. They don’t know their location, but they have to get back to the studio in Amsterdam as soon as possible, without navigation or money. Listeners are allowed to come to the rescue of the two. Elsinga: ,,I suspect that I will not be dropped next to the Martinitoren in Groningen. It’s too recognizable. I think more of a deep dark forest. Whatever location it will be, I will not cheat.” But, she warns: ,,I am a blood fanatic.”
