Edelweiss Matthias Mayer, 32, is retiring with immediate effect. The Austrian made the startling announcement on Thursday morning, after inspecting the super-G hill in Bormio, Italy.
– The time has come for me, he says to the German SRF.
Mayer is a huge alpine sports star and has won gold three Olympics in a row: 2014 in downhill and 2018 and 2022 in super-G. She has ridden thirteen seasons at the highest level and boasts eleven World Cup victories.
– I am satisfied with my career, he says.
This season he was on the podium twice, but there will be no more podium places. He will not be the starter in Thursday’s super-G.
– I had a good start, but that’s enough now.
