On the team, Matthew Valbuena explained how he managed to overcome the stages of his career, going through his departure from the Girondins de Bordeaux, up to his years in Marseille, his return to Lyon, or extra-sporting affairs.
“It’s true that, especially in football, it’s not a long calm river. Even more in the clubs where I played… In any case, I did not choose the facility. When I left Libourne, I had Rennes, Dijon, Marseille… However, as a Bordeaux native, Marseille… (laughs). It is complicated. When I signed, it was Pape Diouf, he told me ‘you know my little one, when you sign one year, it’s as if you signed ten elsewhere’. I thought he was crazy… I did eight seasons. I had difficult moments where sometimes I cried alone, it was complicated. But what made my strength, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, is the passion for football. All the problems I may have had, whether extra-sporting or even inside the club, from the moment I was on a green rectangle, I forgot everything… […] Whatever happens, these are battles, it builds your character, in sport and in life”.
Everything that didn’t kill him made him stronger, in a way.
“Me, I had everything (laughs). It’s true that sometimes we also make mistakes, but that’s normal, that’s the process. But I always took refuge in work. In Marseille, you have to impose yourself, the same in the enemy club in Lyon… When you have extra-sporting problems too and it’s complicated… The episode of the sextape, that’s why I was no longer called up to the France team. It’s a very big regret, I experienced it very badly, because the French team is something incredible, to play for your country… My return to Marseille too… It was complicated to reverse situations, but I managed to impose myself everywhere I went, that’s also the important thing. I start from the principle that when you give everything, that you work… I have succeeded in all the clubs where I have been”.
