Matthew Perry’s funeral was “alternately laughing and crying”. That’s what Hank Azaria, a good friend, tells us Friends-colleague of Perry, to The Messenger. Perry died late last month at the age of 54.
“I was at the funeral last week. It was sad. He was a hilarious man, so we were alternately laughing and crying,” Azaria said. The actor played the role of David, the friend of main character Phoebe, for several episodes. Perry rose to fame with the role of Chandler.
Perry is buried in the cemetery where Michael Jackson, Lucille Ball and Elizabeth Taylor are also buried. The cemetery is more than a kilometer from the studio Friends was recorded.
The service was attended by family members and the surviving protagonists of Friends. Perry’s father, John Bennett Perry, and his stepfather, Keith Morrison, were also in attendance.
Azaria says the whole world has lost someone with Perry’s death. “It’s nice in a way that the world shares that with you,” says Azaria, who previously said he was helped by Perry to stop drinking.
Perry himself struggled with addiction for years, but has been sober in recent years. “Whatever I can do to continue his mission and help people, I will do that,” Azaria concluded.
