In a surprise Hollywood twist, Matthew McConaughey y Woody Harrelson they revealed their suspicions that they could be real brothers.
the stars of True Detectivewho met as colleagues in the new Apple TV+ comedy Brother From Another Mother, they have questioned whether they could actually have the same father in real life.
When speaking on the podcast Let’s Talk Off Camera of Kelly Ripa, McConaughey said: “You know, where I start and where he ends, and where he starts and I end, it’s always been like a blurry line. And that’s part of our bromanceTRUE?”.
“My kids call him Uncle Woody. His children call me Uncle Matthew. And you see pictures of us and my family thinks a lot of pictures of him are me. His family thinks that many photos of me are him ”.
He continued: “In Greece a few years ago we were talking about how close we are and our families. And my mom is there, and she’s like, ‘Woody, I met your dad.’ Everyone noticed the ellipsis that my mom left after ‘I met’. It was a loaded KNOW-Í”.
McConaughey said his mother’s comment prompted him to look into her family history and whether she may have had an affair with Harrelson’s father in which McConaughey was conceived.
“We got to figuring out what ‘I met’ meant,” he said, “and we did some math and found out that Harrelson’s dad was on leave at the same time my mom and dad were going through their second divorce.”
“Then there are possible data and locations in West Texas where there may have been a meeting or a time they ‘met.'”
The actors haven’t decided on a DNA test yet: “Look, it’s a little easier for Woody to say, ‘Come on, let’s get DNA tested,’ because what’s he missing?” McConaughey said.
“It’s a little harder for me because he’s asking me to risk saying, ‘Wait, are you trying to tell me that my dad might not be my dad after 53 years of believing it?’ I’m a little more at risk.”
McConaughey was estranged from his mother, Mary Kathlene McCabe, for several years. The man she has believed all her life to be her father, James, died in 1992.
Harrelson’s father, a hit man named Charles, died in prison in 2007. His mother is Diane Lou Oswald.
