‘Atlanta’, about the adventures of an up-and-coming rapper in the Atlanta hip-hop scene, is a star vehicle for American actor Donald Glover, who is also known by his musical alias Childish Gambino. In season 3, the main characters Paper Boi and Earn go on a European tour, also visiting a club in Amsterdam. Enter our very own Matteo Simoni, as Dutch stage manager, for two scenes with multi-talented Donald Glover. Quite an honour, says Simoni. “At the auditions I thought, ‘I’m never going to have this.’ When they called back to say I got the part, I was really honored. I had healthy stress for that one shooting day,” he admits. “Glover is a really interesting maker in all areas. Not only is he a good actor and musician, he is also a very good writer. Luckily I play a Dutchman who speaks English, so my English didn’t even have to be perfect. (laughs)” Once the adrenaline had subsided, Simoni had a good time on set. “I had a good conversation with Donald. He hasn’t thrown his whole private life on the table, but we did talk about our kids for a while. That stays with us, isn’t it,” Matteo says cheerfully.

His small part in ‘Atlanta’ won’t get him big international roles, he admits: “I think there are other films and series that I’ve made, or will make, that will take me beyond this small part. But I am very proud and honored that I can add this to my palmares. And who knows? The miracles are not over yet.”
