Rome: The notorious Italian mafia boss Matteo Messina Denero (61) has died. He died yesterday while undergoing treatment at the San Salvatore Hospital in Laquila city in a critical condition due to intestinal cancer. Denero, who has been on the run for 30 years, was arrested last January.
He was arrested while undergoing treatment at a private clinic for cancer patients in Palermo, Sicily. He was treated here under the pseudonym Andrea Bonafede. Denero, who was then held in a high-security prison in Laquila, was transferred to a hospital last month after his health deteriorated.
At Denero’s request, hospital officials stopped life-sustaining measures. Denero was known as ‘The Last Godfather of the Sicilian Mafia’. In 1992, he was sentenced to life imprisonment in the case of killing two prosecutors and went on the run the next year.
He is also serving a life sentence for bombings in Florence, Rome and Milan. Mateo is believed to be involved in dozens of murders. Matteo controlled mafia activities while in hiding.
Denero’s gang kidnapped and killed the 12-year-old son of a man who was about to testify against the drug mafia. Born in 1962 in the city of Castelvetrano in southwestern Sicily, Denero followed in the footsteps of his father and entered the mafia world.
He became an expert in the use of firearms at the age of 15. The first murder was at the age of 18. At one point Denero described himself as being able to fill a cemetery with victims. Denero will be buried next to his father’s grave in Palermo.
