Matteo Berrettini in eighth at Roland Garros after his victory over Soon-woo Kwon

Matteo Berrettini qualified this Saturday evening in the round of 16 at Roland Garros thanks to his victory over South Korean Soon-woo Kwon (90th worldwide) in three sets (7-6 [6], 6-3, 6-4). There are therefore three Italians qualified at this stage of the competition this year, a first in the open era.

The No.9 seed struggled to break away in the opening set but managed to win the tie-break on his fourth set point. His power in service (23 aces in total) and his ability to create the game (53 winning shots against 20 to his opponent) then allowed him to come off more easily in the next two sets.

Recent finalist in Madrid (defeat against Alexander Zverev), Matteo Berrettini therefore qualifies for his first round of 16 at Roland Garros (he had already done at least as well in the other three Grand Slam tournaments).

He will meet for a place in the quarter-finals the winner of the match between Roger Federer and Dominik Koepfer, scheduled this Saturday night on the Philippe-Chatrier court.
