Mattel, the US toy giant, has released a new Barbie with Down’s syndrome as part of its efforts to create more diverse and realistic representations in its range. The move comes after criticism that traditional Barbie dolls did not accurately reflect real women or provide relatable figures for people with disabilities. Working closely with the US National Down Syndrome Society, Mattel developed a doll with appropriate physical characteristics and clothing to reflect its association with Down’s syndrome awareness. The goal is to promote empathy and greater understanding among children, leading to a more inclusive and accepting society. Other toy makers, such as Lego, have also responded to similar criticism, creating more inclusive figures to reflect disabled children in the UK.
