A year later, Sergio Mattarella celebrates the first sad anniversary of Codogno’s “patient one”, noting that the nearly one hundred thousand deaths and all the sacrifices asked of the community were not enough: we still have to put the epidemic behind us. Indeed, in these days the alarm of the scientific community is growing for the spread in Italy of new variants of the virus, the English one and beyond, potentially able to feed a third wave just when we hoped to see light at the end of the tunnel. The president is worried; this is evident from the tone of the message of gratitude sent to surgeons and dentists in the person of Filippo Anelli who represents them.
Mattarella expresses “the deepest gratitude to all those who with professionalism and self-denial have found themselves, and still find themselves, at the forefront of facing the pandemic emergency”. The war against the virus unfortunately continues; the daily bulletins of nnew infections, hospitalizations, intensive care and victims have registered signs of progressive deterioration since the beginning of February that stress an already tried health system, multiply the apprehension of families, spread anxiety among the most fragile people, cause despair among the many operators economies brought to their knees by the crisis. Mattarella does not minimize the social drama at all. The same government entrusted to Mario Draghi is proof of this: without the pandemic, the head of state would certainly have allowed the Italians to speak out with new elections after the fall of Giuseppe Conte; instead he took it upon himself to promote a government aimed at guaranteeing an effective vaccination campaign (Mattarella never stroked the no-vax by the fur) and determined to collect more than 2 from Europe00 billion that have been made available to us. Rather than limiting himself to playing the role of the referee aseptically, the President of the Republic felt it was his duty to take the field by taking responsibilityas the case may be.
In particular, there is a passage in the message sent to doctors, which the entire ruling class has as its recipient, without exception: where Mattarella defends our national health system which, “despite the many difficulties, is facing a test without previous and proves more than ever “, underlines the president,” a heritage to be preserved and invested in “. After Covid, there are no more alibis: just consider Healthcare as a cost to be cut down to make room for other expenses. Health comes first and you don’t trade for any reason.
