He chooses the anniversary of the Marcinelle massacre, Sergio Mattarellato renew a call on the theme of work: “From its first article, the Constitution of the Republic establishes an ideal inseparable bond between democracy and work – recalls the President of the Republic -. Full respect for the dignity of workers is a fundamental principle, also affirmed at the international level; an objective that, however, has not yet been fully achieved”. Mattarella chose these words for his message in memory of the 262 victims of the collapse in the Belgian mine of Marcinelle.

“For twenty-three years,” says the Head of State, “the date of the Marcinelle mining disaster in 1956 has given rise to the National Day of Sacrifice of Italian Work in the World. The scale of the tragedy that sixty-eight years ago devastated 262 families – 136 of whom were Italian – has given it a very strong symbolic charge. What happened at the Bois du Cazier is therefore a reminder of the sacrifice of all Italian workers who died abroad while carrying out their professional activities and of those who have contributed their industriousness to even distant countries.”
Starting from the memory of the tragedy, Mattarella reiterates that “carrying out one’s work activity in safety is the first elementary condition. Marcinelle and the other tragedies – adds the President in his message – that have involved Italian migrants in the five continents still constitute today an inescapable warning to promote the dignity of work, an essential value of the identity of our community. To those who have lost family members, friends and colleagues, victims of work, at the Bois du Cazier and in other parts of the world, I renew the expression of the feelings of closeness and solidarity of the Republic”.
