Matt Rule’s Rebuilding Journey at Nebraska: From Fired by Panthers to College Game Triumph

A year ago, Matt Rule found himself unemployed after being fired from the Carolina Panthers.

Now he’s back in the college game, tasked with rebuilding a program in Nebraska desperate to rediscover its former dominance — and he’s enjoying every second of it.

“I’m having the time of my life, really,” she said last week. “It’s happier than it’s been in a long time. My family is here now. My girls are happy, my family is happy, my wife is happy, my son is fine. I’m really enjoying this team.”

Rhule makes his Nebraska debut tonight as his Cornhuskers take on Minnesota in a Big Ten showdown against Fox.

Here are the best moves.

Nebraska and Minnesota

14:03, 3.: Touchdown Nebraska!

What a wonderful start to the second half! First, Rahmir Johnson returned the kickoff from 65 yards to put Nebraska in excellent field position. …

Then Matt Rule called for a trick play, Jeff Sims fumbled the ball, picked it up and threw a bat for a TD, giving the Huskers a 7-3 lead.

:07, 2nd: Intercepted!

Jeff Sims, a Georgia Tech transfer, led Nebraska late in the half with a beautiful drive, snapping up 5-yard and 9-yard runs and completing a 15-yard pass as the Huskers pushed deep into Minnesota territory.

But to equalize at least one chip-shot field goal before halftime, Sims instead threw a pass into the waiting arms of Minnesota’s Trevon Jones in the end zone.

8:48, 2nd: SIMS TAKEN!

Nebraska had a short drive, but in the third, Huskers QB Jeff Sims threw a pass that sailed and was intercepted by Tyler Nubin.

Minnesota coach PJ Fleck took a moment to praise the talent of his QB Athan Kaliakmanis.

12:31, 2nd: Gophers strike first

All of that possession eventually paid off for PJ Fleck’s Minnesota team, who took a 3-0 lead from Dragan Kesich’s 34-yard field goal.

0:00, 1st: A defensive fight

Minnesota again drove a time-consuming drive to Nebraska’s 34-yard line at the end of the first quarter.

Minnesota had the ball for 10:27 of a 0-0 first quarter.

7:55, 1st: Sims are a problem

The Gophers got the ball first and held it for over five minutes. They held the Huskers to their own 1-yard line, but newly minted Nebraska quarterback Jeff Sims gave his team some breathing room with a 26-yard run.

However, the Gophers’ defense held firm and forced a punt.
