Matt Lang knocks on the North Gate

Denis Lord – Local Journalism Initiative

“We’re not coming acoustically, it’s a big team with pyrotechnics, gas basically! It is with these enthusiastic and unequivocal words about the nature of his presence that country singer Matt Lang announces his show at Porte-du-Nord in Chibougamau on March 17th.

Originally from Maniwaki, Matt Lang is considered one of the most promising artists on the Canadian neo-country scene. In 2020, he won Show of the Year at the Country Gala, where he was also nominated as Best Male Performer.

While his first album (simply called Matt Lang) was electrified with rock sounds, the second, More, released in 2020, was more a return to the roots of country, with songs written by Tebey and Danick Duppelle (of the group Emerson Drive ), such as Only a woman and Getcha.

Matt Lang has international ambitions and some of his songs have found success in the ROC. “We want it to be even bigger than what it is,” he says. Our dream is to be even more international. »

The joy of the internship

It is with pleasure that Lang returns to the stage, while the More tour was struck down by the pandemic after a few shows in Germany and elsewhere.
“We live for that, says the singer and guitarist, speaking of the scene. And it looks like we’re having fun performing. This is the comment we hear most often. »
Matt Lang is accompanied by long-time friends: guitarist Étienne Joly, bassist Daniel Moranville and Daniel Laroque on drums. To this group is added the newcomer Marcel Rousseau, steel guitar and banjo. “We met him on the road, comments Matt Lang. He managed to get into a very tight-knit group. »

A festive and versatile show

Doing things on a grand scale, the singer from Maniwaki also takes his tour manager, his sound and lighting engineers, not to mention the fireworks, with him on the road.
The show covers the two albums in full – the first more rock, the second more vintage – in addition to a few covers. Everything is in English, except of course the animation.
Lang calls the show “festive and versatile.”
The tour schedule is very busy and for a long time, with shows in the United States and the United Kingdom in 2023, among others.
Matt Lang was also to play in Paris this summer, at the American Tour Festival which, alas, was cancelled.

In studio

At the time of this writing, before leaving on tour in mid-March, Matt Lang was preparing to travel to Nashville, the country capital, to continue writing his 3rd album. He must find there his sidekick and producer Danick Duppelle, who will collaborate in the creation. “I’ve already started, says the musician. It’s gone well. »
He does not dare to venture for the moment to describe exactly in which country register will be located the album.

But it will be recorded this summer, isolated in the middle of the woods at Studio Wild in Saint-Zénon. A large number of musicians of different styles have recorded their albums there, including Les Cowboys Fringants, Les Soeurs Boulay and Fred Pellerin.
