Mats Hummels on AS Roma: The Insta channel needs an update

Status: 05.09.2024 10:50 a.m.

Football world champion Mats Hummels is continuing his career in Italy. He will play for AS Roma, as the Serie A club announced.

When it was reported a few days ago that Hummels had agreed to a transfer with AS Roma, a story appeared from @aussenrist15. This is how Hummels, 35, calls himself on Instagram.

The video was short and not about the Roma. Hummels simply said that he had bought the wrong contact lenses and wanted to give them away to his followers. “A little gift for the start of autumn,” is what he called it.

Mats Hummels presents transfer in Instagram story

On Wednesday evening (September 4, 2024), Hummels published a new story. This time, he had no contact lenses to give away. You could see three football jerseys, one was white, one blue, one red, and they were flocked with the number 15.

If you looked closely, you could make out the name Hummels above the number. He had linked the club that the jerseys belonged to. He had linked AS Roma.

Hummels has signed a contract in Rome, the duration of which is unknown. In a video that Roma released that same evening, you can see the titles that Hummels has won in his career. The club wrote: “No introduction necessary.”

Hummels at AS Roma: “Here is Mats, the new player”

Mats Hummels introduced himself anyway. In a second video from Roma, he says: “Hey Giallorosso fans, this is Mats, the new player. I’m very happy to play for this club in front of you and I look forward to seeing you in the stadium.”

In the long professional career of footballer Mats Hummels, who won the World Cup with Germany in 2014, AS Roma is only the third club. He has only played for Dortmund and FC Bayern Munich so far. He has played 442 Bundesliga games (33 goals) as a central defender and has won the German championship six times. His last game for BVB was the Champions League final against Real Madrid at the beginning of June. Hummels has played 90 games in the premier class (5 goals).

At the end of June, Hummels’ contract with Borussia Dortmund expired. Since then, he had been linked with many clubs, but he had not signed anywhere. Not at San Sebastian or Mallorca, not even in Bologna, Brighton or Leverkusen.

Roma reacts to the false start not only with Hummels

In Rome, Hummels will meet coach Daniele de Rossi, who used to be a defensive midfielder but now prefers to play attacking football. He had some success with this last season, but the start to the new season was a failure: three games in Serie A, no wins and 16th place.

This was not necessarily due to the defense, which has only conceded two goals so far. Nevertheless, they reacted in Rome. First, the club introduced the Spaniard Mario Hermoso (most recently Atlético Madrid), who is also a defender. Then Hummels followed. Both were allowed to sign as so-called clubless players even after the end of the transfer window a few days ago.

After the international break, Rome will face CFC Genoa in Serie A on Sunday (September 15, 2024, from 12:30 p.m.). It remains to be seen whether Hummels will already be in the squad, or whether he will even play.

Hummels no longer has to contact the employment office

For Hummels, Wednesday was not only a successful day because of his move to Rome. The story he published was not only about his new club.

At the very end there was a not entirely unimportant piece of news: Hummels has been nominated for the Ballon d’Or and he could be named the best footballer in the world at the end of October.

That is not very likely, even though the names of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are missing from the list. But the nomination alone is an honor – especially for a footballer whose future has been the subject of much speculation recently.

Hummels was a world champion without a job, now he has a job and could be named the best in the world. That’s how quickly things can happen in football. That’s why Hummels has a lot to do at the moment. Training with Roma, looking for accommodation and then there’s the matter of his Instagram account. He recently added a not entirely serious note to the description. “Soon@Arbeitsamt,” it said. He can cross that out for now.
