BOLZANO – Matilde Lorenzi she is dead. The promising young Italian skier fell yesterday during training on the Val Senales glacier in Alto Adige. A post from the Ministry of Defense broke the news.
The 19-year-old from Villarbasse (Turin), who grew up sportingly on the snows of Sestriere, was going down the Grawand G1 slope on a fairly flat stretch when – according to what has been reconstructed – the skis split apart and the edges lost contact with the snow cover. Matilde Lorenzi she then fell, hitting her face violently on the frozen ground. At that point one of the skis came loose and the skier tumbled off the slope. The coaches present as well as the carabinieri from the Selva Val Gardena training center immediately intervened on site, joined shortly afterwards by colleagues from the Senales station, who took care of the findings. The skier was rescued and, once intubated by healthcare personnel who arrived on site by helicopter, transported to the San Maurizio hospital in Bolzano. The young woman’s condition immediately appeared very serious. The Alpin Arena in Senales, in the locality Short Masorecently hosted the national teams of Sweden, Switzerland, Slovenia and Croatia. Training and refresher courses for ski instructors also take place on the glacier.
