SAN JOSÉ, California.- The Argentine coach Matías Almeyda will continue to lead the San JoseMLS’s Earthquakes, after rumors had emerged in recent days that he might have returned to the Liga MX.–
Almeyda, 47, was listed as one of the candidates for the vacant coaching position at Cruz Azul, but will remain with the Earthquakes, where he will continue his ongoing project with the club in what will be his third MLS season.
Several local media sources reported that Almeyda had received several offers from Liga MX, including Cruz Azul, but in the end he considered that his continuity with MLS was the best option, given that he has a contract until the 2022 season.
Almeyda recently completed his second season with the San José team in 2020, which finished in last place with the right to play in the playoffs in the Western Conference.
The classification was given despite the inconsistency of their football in the middle of the season and a goal difference of minus 16 in their 23 games played.
But the Earthquakes improved in the final stretch and once again generated confidence among the team managers that the 2021 season could be the decisive one in the reconstruction and implementation of the game system that Almeyda provides.
