Mathieu Van der Poel Pushes Competitor in Cyclo-Cross Race: Controversial Move at Gavere

the essentials The day after Christmas, the Cyclo-Cross law regained its rights this afternoon. While he was well in the lead, Mathieu Van der Poel violently pushed a late competitor while the latter was taking a photo with the public.

The image is striking! This December 26 marked the resumption of Cyclo-cross since the Antwerp round which took place three days earlier. It was time for revenge for Wout Van Aert who had been crushed by the Dutchman that day. But today, the race was the same as in Belgium.

In Gaver, in the Flemish region, Mathieu Van der Poel once again produced a show of force. First the entire race, he caught up with his competitors one by one to leave them more than a lap behind him. He was crowned, ahead of the Belgian from Jumbo Visma Wout Van Aert but also Tom Pidcock. In four races contested, the Flying Dutchman won all the stakes.

Still alone in the world in Gavere, Mathieu van der Poel had to avoid a competitor… who was taking a photo with the public. The latecomer was overtaken on the 3rd lap. #CXWorldCuppic.twitter.com/5uVGeBNF5l

But the image of the day was his stroller on top of the Costa Rican he was catching up with. While we were only in the third lap of the race, the world champion in the category, racing at full speed, saw himself cut off by Felipe Nystrom. He had just finished taking a selfie with his fans and was getting ready to get back on his bike to continue the race. The grandson of Raymond Poulidor did not remain unmoved.

With his left arm, he pushed Felipe Nystrom back into the barriers which will allow him to gain momentum and continue to dominate the race. But this gesture, which has nothing to do with a cycling race, could be punished. During the 2017 Tour de France, for example, Peter Sagan was excluded from the Grande Boucle after having, in the middle of a mass sprint, pushed the Briton Mark Cavendish into the barriers. So obviously, MVP’s action is at lower speed and less dangerous, but the consequence of the fall could have been much more serious.
