No fewer than 38,000 frenzied cross fans enjoyed top-class sport in Hoogerheide on Sunday afternoon. A large part of them will go to work with a heavy hangover on Monday, but that should not spoil the fun. For all other cyclocross enthusiasts, we also look back extensively at that wonderful World Cup cyclocross in the Cycling Flash Podcast.
Maxim and Youri are supplemented by Raymond at the afterthought. The three of them look back on an eventful week, which started with bars-gate and the fuss surrounding course builder (and the father of) Adrie van der Poel. But the apotheosis were of course the top matches that everyone was presented with last weekend.
They extensively discuss the events from the men’s cross: the tactical masterstroke that Van der Poel already made before the World Cup with an action during the team meeting, the flaming start of Lars van der Haar, the takeover of Mathieu van der Poel and the duel that followed with Wout van Aert. That in turn turned into a thumbs-and-finger-licking duel, thanks to two tactical masterstrokes by MVDP.
That ensured that the Jumbo-Visma rider was so taken aback that he made a crucial mistake in the sprint and had to leave the world title to Van der Poel. Of course, the men also reflect on the other crosses of this weekend, in which Fem van Empel, Thibau Nys and Shirin van Anrooij, among others, went home with gold.
