Mathieu Terryn was in a slump when he fell in love with Marie: “Relationship went bad and Bazart got negative reviews”

They had been friends for a lifetime, but it took a bit of luck before sparks flew between Bazart frontman Mathieu Terryn (28) and photographer Marie Wynants (28). That’s what Wynants tells in Humo. “I just wanted to comfort him.”

The story of Marie and Mathieu reads almost like a fairy tale. They met on a ski trip when they were about 8 years old and became sweethearts. When the “relationship” ended, they remained best friends. “We went on a trip together, we gave each other advice about sweethearts,” Marie says. They were friends, but never more than that.

Until Mathieu went through a difficult period about three years ago. “His relationship was going bad. And after the enormous hype, Bazart suddenly got negative reviews everywhere. One night he said, “I don’t know if I can say I’m happy anymore.” I thought that was so bad, he’s normally such a happy pony.” Marie invited Mathieu on a trip to Greece, where sparks flew. “Totally unexpected.”

Bang hart

Marie immediately trusted her gut feeling. Mathieu was more scared, says the photographer. “We still laugh about that. I had to say to him three times: ‘Come on, let’s do it!’” The Bazart frontman was not immediately convinced. “I found that difficult, I was so in love with him and he with me, but I knew I had to give him time. When it started to take too long for me, I consciously took some distance. And then he was there very quickly (laughs).”

Now the two are married, about three years after the spark flew. It party took place in Portugal last summer, though that wasn’t the original plan. “We actually wanted to go to Japan, but that was not possible because of corona. No objection: Portugal was so much fun.” There were hardly any measures then. “The party was only allowed to last until 2 o’clock. Beforehand we thought that was a disaster – we wanted to continue until 6 am – but in the end we were even in bed at a quarter to two (laughs). We were broke.”
