Mathieu Sassolas, from Brest (Finistere), has lived in New York since 2017. Without breaking ties with his native land. Tuesday April 12, 2022, the 35-year-old Brestois was elected president of theassociation BZH New Yorkwhich brings together nearly 80 Breton members.
“The goal is to find us, it’s a anchor in this very cosmopolitan city”, explains Mathieu Sassolas, reached by telephone. And mutual aid works at full capacity:

A Hénaff picnic in Central Park
BZH New York hosts one event per month. At the end of May, the Fête de la Bretagne will be held, in the presence of members of Grain Sail, the Finistère company that transports goods on board a sailing cargo ship to New York.
In November, the first edition of the competition for the best kouign-amann was held; in September 2022, the traditional giant picnic will take place in Central Park, to taste Henaff products. All occasions are good to get together and wear the Breton colors.
The Bretons have a good image here.
Brest in the heart
“We really like New York. The city is pleasant and you never get bored there”, assures Mathieu Sassolas, computer teacher at Queensborough community college. Le Brestois followed his wife who had just landed a job as a translator at the UN.
The couple live in Astoria, Queens. “It was in this district that the Bretons arrived in the 1950s and 60s. They have spread everywhere since. »
At the end of May, Mathieu Sassolas hopes to come to Brest for a few days, where his parents still reside. “It’s going to be good,” says the 30-year-old. I come back as soon as I can, about once a year. Finally, out of the pandemic! The health crisis effectively kept him away from his family for two years.
