“Maternity Ward Forced to Temporarily Suspend Deliveries Due to Lack of Operating Room Personnel”

The activity will be interrupted for eleven days for lack of personnel.

The announcement was made a week ago. Today it is confirmed: “The management of the Émile-Borel hospital center in Saint-Affrique wishes to inform users and pregnant patients in the territory of the temporary suspension of childbirth activity at the maternity ward, from Thursday April 27 at 8 p.m. until Tuesday May 9, 7:30 a.m. This decision was made due to a lack of qualified operating room personnel (operating room nurse anesthetist) during this period, to ensure the safety of mothers and newborns during the delivery in the event of an obstetrical emergency.”

This temporary suspension consists for the maternity unit in interrupting only and temporarily the management of deliveries. All other maternity activities are operating normally.

This closure is mainly due to the departure, at their request, of three state-qualified nurse anesthetists (IADE). Two of them had a CDD at the Millau hospital center. The third wanted a transfer to Castres, in the Tarn.

Since January, we have launched calls for candidates and to date there is no candidate because there is a national shortage, explains Jennifer Mauriat, deputy director of the Émile-Borel hospital. Temporary staff are called in. But the latter has his requirements, in particular the choice of his working periods and his availability. In May, we come to periods with bridges and public holidays. These are difficult times for scheduling on-call schedules to ensure continuity of care.

Individual support for parturients

The operating theater will also be closed during the first week of May. It is not for lack of medical personnel because during this period we will have our obstetrician-gynecologist and our pediatrician who will provide the planned consultations, says Jennifer Mauriat. This is due solely to the lack of IADE.

The annual closure of the operating theater was scheduled due to annual leave for medical staff and certain paramedical staff. No scheduled surgery was planned. If we had the IADEs available, we would have maintained deliveries in Saint-Affrique since we would have had on-call staff to perform emergency caesareans in the operating room.says the deputy director. But the presence of IADE is essential to ensure the safety of care.

During the closure of the maternity unit, individual support will be provided to each parturient potentially concerned, namely pregnant women followed between the 36th and 41st week of amenorrhea. And this within the framework of a telephone exchange with a hospital midwife. They can, according to their choice, be directed to the maternity wards of the department (CH of Millau and Rodez) or of a neighboring territory (CHU of Montpellier or CH of Albi), says Jennifer Mauriat. No patient will be left without a solution.”

Nine patients concerned

For the moment, nine patients are affected by the temporary closure of the maternity ward.

“They have been contacted and are being closely followed, says Jennifer Mauriat. Seven would go to Millau, one to Montpellier University Hospital and one to Albi. It is up to them to get closer to these establishments and it is up to us to send all the medical information for ensure the continuity of care as best as possible, knowing that the entire maternity team can be reached by telephone to answer the questions of future mothers and their concerns.”
