The Cahors maternity unit (Lot) has been closed since Friday August 18, 6:30 p.m., for lack of a pediatrician. Usually, the department’s 18 beds operate with three paediatricians throughout the year. Without a pediatrician at present and for the safety of the patients, they are referred to other hospitals.
Thursday, August 17, the last deliveries in the maternity ward took place, as evidenced by a father. “Friday evening I am told that for lack of pediatricians, the maternity ward no longer accepts deliveries: mothers must go to Montauban!“, he wrote on the internet.
“The midwives call back the ladies who were due to give birth soon and tell them the news. On the phone, there are tears and panic attacks… This mother who has just arrived in the Lot with her 4 children and who does not know anyone… this other whose dangerous position of the baby had required appropriate preparation with the whole team and who in the end will undoubtedly have a caesarean… Each time, the concern for the midwives of an unprepared and unaccompanied birth at home, and the fear for the health of the mother and the baby, the worry to send them to a place where they do not know anyone and where their particular situations are not known either.”
Indeed, the patients were directed to hospitals in neighboring departments: Villneuve-sur-Lot, Brive-la-Gaillarde, Villefranche-de-Rouergue or Montauban. Sometimes more than an hour and a half by car from the patient’s home.
