NEW YORK – Federal agents on Friday seized items from the home of the New York Police Department’s new acting commissioner, Tom Donlon, less than two weeks after the New York City police commissioner resigned.
Donlon confirmed Saturday night that the FBI searched his Upper East Side home a day earlier. Two sources familiar with the investigation told NBC New York that items were seized as part of the investigation.
Our sister station News 4 was told the investigation appeared to be related to Donlon’s previous work in homeland security, before his recent appointment as chief of the New York Police Department. A source said federal investigators were looking into whether he improperly stored classified documents or sensitive material at his home from his time at the FBI and the state’s Office of Homeland Security.
The investigation was unrelated to the other federal investigations underway at City Hall, former Mayor Eric Adams’ fundraiser and the New York Police Department, sources told NBC. No charges have been filed in connection with the investigation and Donlon has not been charged with any wrongdoing.
In a statement, Donlon said that as part of search warrants executed Friday at his residence, federal agents seized “material that came into my possession approximately 20 years ago and is not -related to my work at the New York City Police. Department.”
Donlon said the investigation “was not a department matter and the department will not comment on it.”
A spokesperson for Mayor Adams said “as we’ve said again, we expect every member of the team to fully comply with any law enforcement investigation.”
Spokesmen for the US Attorney’s Office, the FBI and the New York Police Department declined to comment to NBC New York.
Donlon took over as police commissioner after the city’s former police chief, Edward Caban, resigned on Sept. 12 after federal agents seized his cell phone amid an ongoing federal investigation. forward. Caban has not been accused of any wrongdoing.
