If you still have a child’s soul and you are a fan of collectible cars Matchboxthen there’s good news for you, because Mattel has just given away the rights to its classic toy for a movie.
Apple Original Films has snapped up the powerful film package coming from Skydance and Mattel Films. Sam Hargrave, the director behind Extractionis on board to direct the film.
Matchbox is the toy brand first created in 1953 and acquired by Mattel in 1997. Mattel competed with Matchbox in the die-cast car space with its own line, Hot Wheels. According to lore, car enthusiast Jack Odell designed the first car for his daughter, who was allowed to take a toy to school only if it was small enough to fit in a matchbox. When his daughter’s school friends also began clamoring for a “matchbox car,” an iconic brand was born.
That’s where it comes in John Cenawho would have a leading role in the upcoming film.
The project is coming full speed ahead with a script by David Coggeshall, who wrote the action comedy The Family Plan and Jonathan Tropper, the author and screenwriter who wrote Ryan Reynolds’ action-adventure film The Adam Project.
