World number one Jannik Sinner comes straight from the China Open and, like his final opponent this week, Carlos Alcaraz, is through to the Shanghai Masters. Sinner defeated Taro Daniel 6:1, 6:4 and opened his Shanghai Masters campaign. He is the first player born in the 2000s to reach 250 wins, and he remains on track to surpass his record of 64 from last season. This is a real indicator of the Italian’s form. He is also at the top of the list as an Italian in the Open era.
“I felt very comfortable today,” said the 23-year-old. “I also feel physically in good shape, which is very important for me. Of course I will try to improve for tomorrow’s performance, but today I served very, very well, especially in the important moments, and did well moved.”
Sinner has a 14-0 record in first-round matches this year and has reached the quarterfinals in all 13 tournaments played in 2024. He also went 51-0 against players outside the top 20 last season.
He will now face No. 31 seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the third round, who may face Ben Shelton in Shanghai. A year after Shelton took him out in Shanghai. But despite the cloud of doping scandal that hangs over the world number 1, he continues to fight through and deliver good performances.
