Match Awards from Bayern Munich’s 5:0 loss against Borussia Mönchengladbach in the DFB-Pokal

Jersey Swap: Breel Embolo

The Swiss striker was on fire tonight! He was the best player on the pitch by far. He constantly gave Bayern Munich’s players headaches when he was on or off the ball. He was vital in every attack Borussia Mönchengladbach had. When he was on the field he managed to score two goals, both in the second half; one assist, and he managed to win a penalty! He also had a few more chances to score more goals, but Manuel Neuer got the better of him.

The Kaiser: Nobody

The defense was abysmal tonight… Dino Toppmöller basically subbed almost his whole backline at one point of the match. I’ve never seen Dayot Upamecano play that bad, but the same goes for Lucas Hernandez. Benjamin Pavard was under a lot of fire recently, and this match doesn’t go in his favor. Alphonso Davies also had a terrible evening as his passing was much worse than usual.

Things got a bit better after Niklas Süle, and Josip Stanišić entered the match. Both of them brought stability and strength in duels. We could easily see them in the starting eleven on Saturday.

Football god: Joshua Kimmich … Kinda?

To be fair, Joshua Kimmich was one of the better players in his squad. Well, to put it more precisely — he was one of the few who were playing. When the situation got very serious after Bayern conceded two goals, Kimmich started to cover a lot of ground. He was all over the pitch for the better part of the match, but it was all in vain. His teammates couldn’t offer him much support. As most players already gave up, Kimmich was out there trying to do something. In the end, Mönchengladbach defended well, and there was nothing Bayern could do.

Der Bomber: Nobody

Although Bayern had their chances and made Yann Sommer work, it wasn’t enough. Sommer also provided some excellent work between the posts, but it also has to be said — Bayern didn’t make that many serious chances. Which is very strange for Bayern. The Bavarians tried to beat Sommer on a few occasions, mostly on corners, where Tolisso provided the best chance — he hit the bar. Robert Lewandowski also had a good chance from the corner, but unfortunately, his header was easily saved by Sommer.

Meister of the Match: Adi Hütter

Well… Mönchengladbach simply outplayed Bayern Munich like almost nobody ever did. And it is thanks to Adi Hütter. He prepared perfectly for this match, and everything clicked for them and everyone was simply extraordinary. They scored early, caught Bayern sleeping, and the Record champions never actually recovered from the first goal, and by the time they settled, it was already 5:0…

Simply a legendary win/loss that will be remembered for a long time. Although Bayern didn’t lose by such a margin for who knows how long, Hütter might have discovered an antidote for Bayern, and other teams might be watching.
