Matas Light, a current member of the National Polyphonic Choir, is set to debut his recent album titled “Oh my” at the Rondeman Abasto venue in Buenos Aires on Saturday. The album features Latin American and popular pulse songs that speak of the history, pains, losses, and struggles of the people.
Matas, who previously released an EP in tribute to Violeta Parra in 2019, believes it is necessary to continue singing, naming, and spreading the complex and wonderful music that represents the identity of the people.
The album, which will be performed on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. at Lavalle 3177, showcases compositions by women artists such as Violeta Parra, Chabuca Granda, Lhasa de Sela, María Elena Walsh, Leda Valladares, Hilda Herrera, Eladia Blázquez, and Matas himself.
Matas explains that his decision to focus on compositions by female artists is influenced by his feminist perspective. He believes in the importance of representation and equality in terms of rights. Through his music, he aims to connect with his friends, family, and audience, creating emotions that awaken and inspire change.
Trained in academic music at the National University of the Arts and the Instituto Superior de Arte del Teatro Colón, as well as in Latin American popular music at the National University of San Martín, Matas has brought together a talented group of musicians for this album. The group includes Santiago Torricelli on piano, Carmen Rencar on cello, Diana Arias on double bass, and Mariana Mariñela on percussion. Contributions from Augustine Lumerman on percussion, Julieta Bril on violin, and The Ferni on vocals have also been added.
Matas describes his transition from academic training to popular music as a journey that allowed him to connect more deeply with the music and landscapes of Latin America. While academic music has provided him with technical and vocal tools, popular music offers more room for play, enjoyment, and personal expression.
In addition to his solo project, Matas also has a duet with guitarist Florencia Knoblovitz. Together, they combine Latin American music with feminist readings by Nayla Beltrán, Simone de Beauvoir, Alejandra Pizarnik, and Alfonsina Storni. They will be performing on June 22 at the National University of the Arts and on July 9 at Giuffra.
