Matanzas will begin mass vaccination on July 29

Mass vaccination in the remaining seven municipalities, including pregnant women, will begin on July 29, reported José Ángel Portal Miranda, Minister of Public Health, at a meeting chaired by Manuel Marrero Cruz, Prime Minister of Cuba, in this city.

Portal Miranda explained that Cárdenas, Colón and Matanzas successfully concluded the health intervention with Abdala, the first vaccine approved in Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as health workers, tourism, airport and some transporters, Limonar and Ciénaga de Zapata are advancing towards the third dose and Los Arabos transits to the second.

At the meeting, the Prime Minister, a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC), learned of the current epidemiological situation of the western territory, the epicenter of the COVID-19 epidemic, which today has 6,105 cases active and an average of 1,671 daily, according to Mario Sabines Lorenzo, Governor of Matanzas.

A detailed explanation received the Prime Minister on the availability of oxygen for hospitals, the strengthening of primary health care, and the incorporation of 450 private transporters to support the transfer of patients, food, medical supplies and any necessary situation.

The Minister of Public Health highlighted the decisive role played by active investigations to identify symptomatic people early in the communities to cut the transmission of highly contagious strains that circulate in the Matanzas province.

Joel Queipo Ruiz, member of the PCC Secretariat, and Jorge Luis Tapia Fonseca, Deputy Prime Minister, who have been accompanying the authorities of the province for several weeks in the work of confronting the SARS-Cov2 virus, presented their experiences and commented on the system of organized work to obtain real-time information on the health situation.

“Although the figures are still high and the situation is complex, it can be seen from the measures and multifactorial joint work that there are important advances, little by little, said Marrero Cruz, we are not going to trust ourselves, we are in full combat, but it would be fatal go back, “he added.

“Strengthen the measures more, accompany the health intervention with distancing, disinfection, isolation, we need more unity, listen to each other more, better times will come, but we have to get ahead of the current situation,” said the Prime Minister.

Marrero Cruz, also accompanied by Liván Izquierdo Alonso, first secretary of the PCC in Matanzas, exchanged with executives in Cárdenas, one of the municipalities with the highest incidence rate in the country.

“We will initiate health intervention in the population over nineteen years of age in the remaining Matanzas municipalities, and we will also proceed with all pregnant women in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy and also in women who breastfeed; so the province would be in a better situation to complete the entire vaccination scheme in the month of August, “he said.

Portal Miranda, in statements to Radio Rebelde, explained that given the conditions of high transmission in the province of Matanzas, it was decided to start the health intervention in all the other municipalities, including pregnant women, on Thursday 29.

Asked about the population under 19 years of age, Portal Miranda commented that it is being foreseen, according to the progress of clinical studies; that from September it can begin in the country, an announcement that will be made public soon when all the necessary elements are in place.

“For now,” Portal Miranda pointed out, “people from Matanzas over 19 years old, pregnant women in the first and second trimesters because they are an important risk group and women who are breastfeeding, who have also stopped this health intervention. The effort demands much more care and dedication, in such a way that we estimate that already in September, we will conclude and Matanzas will be the second province in the nation to undertake a health intervention to a large extent ”.

On how he describes the evolution of the pandemic in Matanzas, Portal Miranda said that “it is very complex, where it cannot be trusted, but I believe that the actions that are being undertaken may allow us to move towards solving the problem, but for now it remains transmission is very high in the midst of the spread of a strain that is highly contagious ”.

According to Ronquillo Bello, the donation was made thanks to the reaction of all the members of the UPEC at the national level as well as some institutions such as the Cuban Red Cross, Suchel, Labiofam and the Cuban Fund for Cultural Assets, as a result of the serious situation the province is going through.
