Jannik Sinner won his debut match in the “BNP Paribas Open”, the seventh Masters 1000 of the season with a prize pool of $ 8.36 million, taking place on Indian Wells hard courts in the United States. The 20-year-old from Sesto Pusteria overtook the Australian in the second round John Millman (ATP 58) with a double 6-2.
In the third round Sinner, number 10 on the board and with a bye in the first round, will challenge the winner of the match between the American John Isner (ATP 24) and Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka (ATP 75). The blue lost the only direct clash against Isner in mid-August in the “1000” in Cincinnati in three sets, while he has not yet played against Nishioka.
The South Tyrolean, who won his fourth career ATP title in Sofia last Sunday, is thus always in the running for the ATP Finals in Turin scheduled for mid-November. Sinner, who currently occupies 14th place in the world rankings, plays for the first time ever on hard courts in California. For Sinner it is the tenth “1000” in his career: the best result of Riccardo Piatti’s pupil is the final in Miami last April, where he was defeated in two sets by the Polish Hubert Hurkacz.
Sinner played a perfect match tonight. Riccardo Piatti’s pupil got off to a great start and immediately took off the 32-year-old Australian’s turn twice. After just over half an hour of play Sinner wins the first set without problems for 6-2.
Even in the second half of the game, the blue immediately breaks the 2-1 break. Sinner extends to 3-1, thus paving the way for winning the match. As in the first set, Sinner on 4-2 again manages to remove Millman’s turn to serve. The number 58 gives up, while Sinner does not miss a thing on his serve. After an hour and 14 minutes of play it ends 6-2 for the Italian star. Great performance of strength by Sinner, who did not leave the slightest chance to Millman.
