Masters 1000 Indian Wells: Eliminated in the round of 16 Jannik Sinner

Jannik Sinner ITA, 2001.08.16

Jannik Sinner’s adventure in the Indian Wells Masters 1000 ends in the round of 16. In the night between Wednesday and Thursday, the 20-year-old from Sesto Pusteria was eliminated by the American Taylor Fritz, number 39 in the world ranking, in two sets 6-4, 6-3.

Sinner, number 14 in the world and 10th seeded in the Californian tournament, after having conceded only four games on his debut (directly in the 2nd round) to the Australian John Millman (ATP 58) and having had a bye against John Isner, the blue played for a place in the top eight of the tournament with local favorite Taylor Fritz. The 23-year-old American is in excellent form, having beaten world number 7 Matteo Berrettini 6-4, 6-3 not even 24 hours ago in the third round. Sinner and Fritz faced each other for the first time in their careers.

Today the talent of Rancho Palos Verdes has shown all its qualities. The first set is very balanced. Up to 5-4 for Fritz both players take off the bat twice respectively. Then, in the tenth game, the American creates four set balls. Sinner manages to cancel the first three, but not the fourth, which Fritz closes for 6-4.

The blue is too wrong in the second set, also because Fritz is showing a very high level of tennis. Sinner in the opening game wastes two balls for the possible 1-0, on the other side the number 39 immediately places two breaks for the extension of 4-0. Sinner, however, does not give up, comeback one of the two breaks and shortens the distance to 4-2. In the ninth game the blue on Fritz’s serve, is already ahead 15-40. The American, however, cancels both break points and after an hour and 40 minutes of play he wins with the first match point for 6-3.

Sinner thus misses his second quarter-final by a “1000”. All in all a defeat that is a bit surprising, but also thanks to an excellent performance by Fritz. The blue in recent weeks is still trying to qualify for the ATP Finals in Turin. In the “Race” Sinner temporarily occupies 10th place with 2,595 points. Next week Riccardo Piatti’s pupil is enrolled in the ATP 250 in Antwerp, then he will play the “500” in Vienna.
