A medical source at the Kunduz Provincial Hospital said that 35 people died and more than 55 injured had been taken there. Meanwhile, the group Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said 20 people were killed and dozens injured were taken to its hospital.
The UN mission to Afghanistan said the death toll was at more than 100. “Initial information indicates more than 100 people were killed and injured in a suicide explosion inside the mosque,” the mission said on Twitter.

ISIS in Afghanistan known as ISIS Khorasan or ISIS-K, an extremist group arch rival to the Taliban, has repeatedly targeted the Shi’ite community in an attempt to stir up sectarian violence in Sunni-majority Afghanistan.
In a statement released on its Telegram channel, ISIS said that an ISIS suicide bomber detonated an explosive vest in a crowd of Shia worshipers gathered inside the mosque.
The statement identified the bomber as “Muhammad al-Uyguri”. The suspect’s last name indicates that he is from China’s Uighur minority.
Mulawi Dost Muhammad, the Taliban’s security chief in Kunduz, accused the attackers of trying to stir up trouble between Shiites and Sunnis, and insisted there was no dispute between the Taliban and the minority group.
