The basic keys
There are some essential keyboard shortcuts to memorize because you can use them almost anywhere in macOS. Most of them correspond well to the keyboard shortcuts you know from Windows:
Command + C for copying.
Command + X for cutting.
Command + V for pasting.
Command + A select for all.
Command + S for saving, and Command + Shift + S for Duplicate (instead of ‘Save As’).
Command + W to close a tab or window.
Command + Q to completely close an app or program (unlike Windows, apps are not automatically closed if you close all windows).
Command + Space to open the Spotlight search tool.
Command + Ctrl + Q to lock your Mac.
Take screenshots
Met Command + Shift + 3 take a screenshot, but Command + Shift + 4 goes one step further. This allows you to indicate which part of your screen you want to have in the image. Simply drag a rectangle with your mouse and your Mac will do the rest. Screenshots are saved to your desktop by default.

Use Finder
Finder is your file manager, so there’s a good chance you have it open all the time. Because you use it all the time, Finder shortcuts quickly become very productive. These are the most important:
Command + N for a new window
Command + T for a new tab.
Command + Shift + D to quickly go to your desktop (‘Desktop’),
Command + Shift + H for your home folder
Command + Shift + O for Documents.
Command + Option + L for the Downloads-map.
Space for a preview of the selected file.
Return to rename a selected file.
Command + O to open a selected file in the default app.
Command + Backspace to delete a selected file.
Shift + Command + Backspace to empty the trash.
Shortcuts for apps and programs
App builders and program makers are not something of yesterday, and they understand that it is impossible to memorize a new series of shortcut keys for every program. Many developers who create programs for macOS therefore use the same key combinations. They don’t work in every program, but learn these combinations by heart and you’ll work a lot faster.
Command + comma to open the settings of the active program.
Command + F to search text.
Command + G to then scroll through the results.
Command + Tab to switch between apps.
Command + ` (next to Z) to switch between windows of the same app.
Control + Tab to rotate between tabs in the same window.
Command + + (the plus sign) to zoom in.
Command + – to zoom out.
Sure, you can do (almost) everything with your mouse, but if you really want to work quickly and productively, these keyboard shortcuts are indispensable for any Mac user. Make sure you get your hands on them quickly, you will really benefit from it!
