The space is both oppressive and gives people a sense of powerlessness that makes them want to escape but find it difficult to let go.

Xu Zhaoren often arrived at the scene early to observe the environment, and made adjustments immediately when he noticed something was wrong, which tested the adaptability of the actors and staff. For example, in the first episode where the family celebrates their father’s birthday, three scenes were shot together, allowing seven actors to squeeze into a small space and express each other’s awkward and helpless moods. Because the space on the top floor for shooting the sunset was a bit monotonous, Xu Zhaoren asked the art team to create a pigeon cage, which also symbolizes the wanderer’s final return to his hometown.
In another highlight scene of Wu Kangren writing a suicide note, Xu Zhaoren only arrived at the scene to make the decision to add a scene of family chatting after dinner: “Although Wu Kangren was alone in the room at that time, after dinner, the family were all active in other spaces, whether it was the sound of washing dishes or the rooftop. All the conversations we had while enjoying the cool air would reach his ears.” These words became the emotional bond of the family, and eventually turned into insights about life.
