The humiliation of the contestants is one of the ingredients of the success of MasterChef, but some are really disappointed.
Since the first edition, which aired in 2011, MasterChef has conquered the audience of cooking enthusiasts. The program was actually launched in 1990 but met with little success, so it was initially shelved, but the format was completely revised in 2005 and began to spread in various countries.
Much of the success of the Italian edition of the program is due to the apt choice of the judges, initially three: Bruno Barbieri, Carlo Cracco and Joe Bastianich, the latter with already a season of MasterChef USA behind him. Antonino Cannavacciuolo is also added to the close-knit trio in the fifth season, who already had a good audience following thanks to the program Cucine da Incubo.
From the seventh season of MasterChef the cards are shuffled a bit, given the farewell of Carlo Cracco announced live during the final of the previous edition. In his place comes Antonia Klugmann, the first female judge, but who never really entered the hearts of the programme’s fans, so from the following season comes Giorgio Locatelli, the chef who built his success abroad.
At the ninth edition, another historical figure of the program leaves Joe Bastianich, present since the first season of MasterChef, this time however the production decides not to replace him and to increase the judges to three again as for the first 5 seasons.
The outbursts of the MasterChef judges
A fundamental characteristic of the MasterChef judges is their severity, with dishes thrown into the waste bin, food spat into handkerchiefs and outbursts that leave some competitors speechless. For example, thanks to Bruno Barbieri, words like “mappazzone” have rightfully entered the vocabulary of fans of the program to define those truly poorly plated dishes.
But many will also remember expressions like “do you want me to die?” or “you’re disappointing me” pronounced in Bastianich’s unmistakable Italian-American accent, who went so far as to define one of the dishes as “a piece of s***t” and one of the competitors as “a**h**e”.

The worst ratings from MasterChef guests
As if the judges weren’t enough, it’s also the guests who make the MasterChef contestants tremble, in fact the format includes some episodes in which the contestants try their hand at dishes from other famous chefs. The test of this type most feared by competitors is certainly the pastry making test in the presence of the very famous Iginio Massari.
Massari himself expresses his opinions bluntly, many will remember the episode dedicated to the Italian cake which turned into a real riot of insults. “On an aesthetic level, to describe a bad thing I will take you as an example” he said to one of the competitors, Salvatore. Gilberto, another competitor and finalist of MasterChef 8, didn’t fare any better: “You make me smile and I want to cry in front of this dessert” and then concludes after tasting it with “the custard makes me feel sorry for myself.” I refuse to call it an Italian cake.”
