Massive Vaccination Campaign in Arequipa to Protect Children Against Polio and Measles

The Regional Health Management (Geresa) launched a massive vaccination campaign throughout the Arequipa region. The main objective is to ensure that the boys and girls under 5 years of age complete their vaccination schedule against polio and measles. Diseases that can cause disability and even death.

Giovanna Valdivia, regional coordinator of Immunizations of the Regional Health Management, reported that the Vaccination rates have decreased since 2019. Vaccination coverage also suffered a noticeable decline during the years of the covid-19 pandemic. Until 2022, it was recorded that 25 thousand children under 5 years of age in Arequipa had not received the polio vaccine. In addition, 45,000 had also not been vaccinated against measles.

Faced with this situation, the specialist warns that the boys and girls are susceptible and are at risk of contagion. In order to prevent possible outbreaks of these diseases in Arequipa, the official called on parents to vaccinate their children and complete the corresponding vaccination schedule.

“Arequipa is a region free of polio and measles, no cases have been reported so far. We are taking preventive measures before any case occurs, since these infectious diseases are even more contagious than covid-19
