The results of this year’s road safety weeks in Frankfurt am Main are worrying: In the first two school weeks of the new school year 2024/2025, the city’s traffic police found significant speeding on school routes. Particularly alarming is one case in which a vehicle was caught speeding at 88 km/h in a 30 km/h zone – almost three times faster than the speed limit. In total, around 5,200 speeding violations were recorded in around 59,000 vehicles checked, which underlines the urgency of the action.

In addition to speed checks, the campaign also focused on raising awareness about the risks of so-called “parent taxis”, i.e. parents who drive their children right to school. Wolfgang Siefert, head of the mobility department, is stunned by the reckless behavior of some drivers.

especially near schools and kindergartens. The city of Frankfurt is therefore planning to further intensify its efforts to reduce traffic and is relying on a combination of controls, educational work and targeted traffic calming measures.

The road safety weeks highlight how important it is to protect children in traffic. Mayor Mike Josef stresses the importance of recurring school projects to promote awareness of dangers among both children and adults. Parents are advised to encourage their children to behave independently in traffic at an early stage in order to promote their safety and independence. Further information on road safety education in Frankfurt is available on the city’s website.
