Massive Snowfall in Eastern Turkey Causes Road Closures and Transport Delays

There are road closures

A snow cover reaching a depth of ten meters has formed in many places in Eastern Turkey, reports Turkish television NTV. Snowfall and blizzards in eastern Anatolia have given way to freezing cold in recent days, with nighttime temperatures approaching minus 30 degrees.

The lowest temperature measured was from Ardahan district, where in the local town of Childer, the mercury on the thermometers showed 31 degrees below zero. Due to the freezing weather, the roads in the area are icy. In the Agra district, the temperature has reached minus 23 degrees.

In Hakkyari, ten-meter snowdrifts have completely buried the one-story buildings and agricultural buildings in some villages. Due to an avalanche, the road between the towns of Chukurdzha and Yuksekova is closed.

Snow blocks traffic to hundreds of settlements in Turkey

Due to the accumulated snow, roads leading to hundreds of villages in various districts in the eastern part of the country are blocked. In Bitlis district alone, there is no access to nearly 150 settlements, and the teams are trying to clear the four-meter deep snow from the roads. Many settlements in Van, Hakkyari and Mush counties are also inaccessible.
