Opponents of the A69 continue to mobilize. Some 200 to 400 people, including several elected officials, gathered Monday evening in front of the Ministry of Ecological Transition in Paris to denounce the motorway project between Toulouse and Castres and more broadly the government’s ecological policy.
The collective of opponents of the highway project had called for a rally in front of the ministry, where Thomas Brail was dislodged on Sunday from the tree in which he had been installed for ten days. On hunger strike since the beginning of September, this activist represents the collective “The Way is Free”, opposed to the project in the name of the environment and the climate. “Things have to move, we can no longer do nothing,” he declared.
A gathering on the day of Macron’s announcements on ecology
The gathering also took place a few hours after the presentation, by President Emmanuel Macron, of the main axes of his ecological planning.
The A69 project is “symbolic” of the government’s failing environmental policy, said Christophe Bex, La France insoumise MP for Haute-Garonne. Emmanuel Fernandes (LFI, Bas-Rhin) also criticized the executive for having “no ambition” in this area. According to Murielle Lepvraud (LFI, Côtes-d’Armor), the mobilization against this type of project “will increase”. “Thank you Thomas”, also shouted to the demonstrators the former environmentalist presidential candidate Yannick Jadot, elected to the Senate on Sunday.
The Alternatiba group denounced a plan “below ambitions” and a policy “for the rich”. “The government is turning a deaf ear,” for her part accused Camille Chaudron, environmental activist, claiming to be on her third day of hunger strike in “solidarity” with Thomas Brail, who indicated he was summoned Wednesday for a hearing before the justice.
In the spring, several thousand opponents of the construction of this 53 km section of motorway demonstrated to denounce this project deemed contradictory to the climate emergency. Numerous administrative or legal appeals have been launched against the A69 but none have so far been successful.
