Massive rainfall on Thursday – astonishing numbers

Massive rain on Thursday in Frankfurt: Several districts are struggling with flooding. How extraordinary the showers were.

Record-breaking amounts of rain on Thursday in Frankfurt am Main: According to a meteorologist from Hessischer Rundfunk, it rained more in the Main metropolis on Thursday than usual in the whole of September.

Ingo Bertram, meteorologist for the HR weather department, delivered the impressive figures in the evening: “At the measuring station in Frankfurt’s Westend, around 41 liters of rain per square meter were recorded between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. If you add the night before, another 19 liters are added .”

This amount of rain significantly exceeds the long-term average for the entire month of September. Bertram explained: “The long-term average for Frankfurt is 47 liters per square meter – for the entire month of September. So we exceeded the entire monthly average on a single day.” He was referring to the average for the years 1961 to 1990.

The districts of Westend, Ginnheim, Dornbusch and Preungesheim were hit particularly hard. Here, numerous streets temporarily turned into small lakes because the sewage system could not absorb the water quickly enough.

It will also be wet on Friday: with a lot of rain, strong winds and temperatures around 16 degrees are expected. On Saturday it will loosen up a bit, but individual showers are still possible with temperatures around 14 degrees – and strong winds are still expected.

Sunday is supposed to be sunnier: the German Weather Service and the portal “Kachelmannwetter.com” expect 15 degrees and several hours of sunshine. At the beginning of the new week it will rain again, before it will probably remain largely dry on the Main for the rest of the coming week. Even then, the temperatures remain at a rather autumnal 15 degrees.
