“Massive Rail Strike in Hesse Expected to Cause Major Disruptions”

Frankfurt/Main (dpa/lhe) – Due to a large-scale warning strike, hardly any trains are expected to run in Hesse on Monday either. A railway spokeswoman in Frankfurt was initially unable to say on Friday which trains and lines will be specifically affected. “In principle, we only know that when the strike begins. Of course, we also assume that there will be massive effects in regional transport.” It is to be expected that there could be effects on sub-networks on Sunday from 6 p.m. This is the case, for example, with the Rhein-Main S-Bahn service.

“Serious effects” on the rails are to be expected, said Andreas Güth, branch manager of the EVG in Kassel, on Friday. Long-distance and freight transport will also be massively affected by the strike.

According to the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV), most regional and S-Bahn lines will be canceled in its area. One of the exceptions is the regional train (RB) 12 between Königstein and Liederbach. The rail replacement service should also run on the Taunusbahn route as planned. In addition, some RB 15 trains run between Grävenwiesbach and Wehrheim for school traffic.

According to a statement from the North Hessian Transport Association (NVV), regional trains and regional trams are expected to be canceled in northern Hesse from Sunday evening. All train traffic in the NVV area will probably come to a standstill, it said. From Sunday 10:00 p.m. to Tuesday 12:00 a.m., the regional trains on the RT1 (Kassel-Hofgeismar-Hümme) and RT4 (Kassel-Wolfhagen) lines will be canceled. On Wednesday, the trains should run again regularly from the start of operations. According to the announcement, the bus lines of the NVV should run without restrictions, as should the trams and buses of the Kasseler Verkehrs- und Versorgungs GmbH (KVG).

Other railway companies such as Vlexx also expected a standstill on the rails, since the rail infrastructure is probably not available due to the call for a strike at DB Netz AG. “We assume that we cannot drive,” said a spokeswoman.

The railway and transport union (EVG) had called on employees on Thursday for the third warning strike in the current bargaining round. The strike should last from 10 p.m. Sunday evening to 12 p.m. Tuesday evening. The railway decided to completely stop long-distance traffic during this time. Hardly any trains will run at DB Regio either.

Collective bargaining in the railway sector has been going on since the end of February. It is the third nationwide warning strike that the EVG has called for since then. In March, together with the Verdi services union, she paralyzed large parts of public transport, including most airports, for a day. The second strike in April was limited to a period of eight hours, but also caused many failures, especially in long-distance traffic.

Deutsche Bahn and EVG are currently still arguing about the statutory minimum wage of 12 euros, which the union wants to include in the tariff tables so that all further negotiation results are calculated on this basis. Deutsche Bahn has now agreed to this, but only wants to clarify later in the negotiations whether all collective bargaining results will also be included in the tables for these employees or whether they will be paid in the form of allowances. The EVG meanwhile complained that wages were capped at 13 euros. This applies to cleaning or security staff, for example.
