From today: Railway line in Saxony closed for ten days
An electronic signal box is now in operation in Bad Schandau. All trains and S-Bahn trains between Dresden and the Czech Republic are affected by the work.

Train travelers and commuters will have to accept massive restrictions on the railway line through the Elbe Valley between Dresden and the Czech border between Tuesday evening and October 27th. According to Deutsche Bahn, the S-Bahn trains are being canceled in individual sections and are being replaced by buses. For long-distance traffic, there is a rail replacement service between Dresden main station and Ústí nad Labem.
The reason is extensive construction work on the tracks east of Bad Schandau. The railway is now putting a new electronic signal box into operation there. The signals, overhead lines and switches have been upgraded since 2022 and now they have to be connected to the new signal box. In addition, two main tracks are being repaired. To do this, the railway is replacing the rails, sleepers and the substructure including the track ballast. No trains can run on the route during this work.
The new technology is intended to ensure smooth train traffic between Germany and the Czech Republic, explains the railway. The modernization of the Bad Schandau Ost freight station also has a positive impact on passenger traffic in the Elbe Valley. There will be fewer delays in the future because S-Bahn trains will no longer have to wait because a track is blocked by a freight train.
When and where is the railway line in the Elbe Valley closed?
The railway line through the Elbe valley will be closed between Bad Schandau and Schöna. The closure will last from 8pm on October 17th to 4am on October 27th.
Which S-Bahn trains are affected?
S1 Meißen Triebischtal–Dresden–Pirna–Schöna:
The trains between Bad Schandau and Schöna will be completely canceled during the work. There are buses between Bad Schandau and Schmilka (Czech border) on the right bank of the Elbe.
From 19/20. until the 24th/25th In October, trains will be canceled between the health resort of Rathen and Bad Schandau on nights from 9:30 p.m. Also all day on October 26th. Instead, buses run between Pirna – Königstein – Bad Schandau.
On the nights of 25/26. and 26/27. Buses run between Dresden main station and Bad Schandau from 7 p.m. on October 1st.
In addition, the Heidenau Süd and Heidenau-Großsedlitz traffic stops will be closed all day from October 17th (10 p.m.) to October 24th (4 a.m.). The trains are being diverted.
S2 Dresden Airport–Dresden Hbf–Pirna:
From October 18th to 20th and October 23rd, trains between Heidenau and Pirna will be canceled. Between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., in addition to the alternative use of line S1, there is a replacement by buses.
Likewise, on October 25th and 26th, the trains between Dresden Hbf and Pirna will be canceled from 7 p.m. and will be replaced by buses.
Which trains are affected?
RB71 Pirna–Dürrröhrsdorf–Neustadt–Sebnitz:
On the 25th/26th From October 1st, the trains between Dürrröhrsdorf and Pirna will be canceled from 7:30 p.m. Buses run.
RB72 Heidenau–Glashütte–Altenberg:
On the 25th/26th From October 20th, the trains between Dohna and Heidenau will be canceled from 8 p.m. and will be replaced by buses.
U28 Děčín–Schöna–Bad Schandau–Sebnitz–Dolní Poustevna–Rumburk
Cancellation of trains between Bad Schandau and Dolní Žleb. There are buses on the right bank of the Elbe between Bad Schandau and Děčín. On the 25th/26th Buses run between Sebnitz – Bad Schandau – Děčín every October from 8 p.m.
RE20 Dresden–Bad Schandau–Děčín–Ústí nL–Litoměřice city
On the 21st/22nd The trains are canceled in October. A replacement bus service will be set up for travelers. The longer travel times of the buses result in earlier departures or later arrivals and travel time extensions. Some replacement stops are not at the respective train stations due to the road layout.
The Eurocity trains are canceled between Dresden main station and Děčín. As a replacement, buses run from Strehlener Straße at the main train station between Dresden and Ústí nad Labem hl.n. The journey time is extended by around 45 minutes. Travelers are asked to inform themselves about the different travel times for buses and connecting trains.

According to Deutsche Bahn, all changes have already been incorporated into the timetable. What’s next on the railway line in the Elbe Valley?
From November onwards, the railway between Bad Schandau Ost and Schöna will continue to be built. Until April 2024, the route must be closed on Mondays for an hour at a time so that the construction sites in the narrow Elbe valley can be supplied by rail. The old signal box and the old tracks will be dismantled and the overhead lines between Schöna and the Bad Schandau Ost freight station will be replaced. (SZ/dis)
