Massive Radioactive Water Leak at Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant in Japan

Jakarta

Radioactive water leak occurs at Nuclear Power Plant (PLTN) Fukushima Of Japan. An estimated 5,500 liters of radioactive water leaked from the nuclear power plant, but no signs of contamination were detected outside the facility.

A spokesman for the operator of the Fukushima nuclear plant, Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO), told AFP that a leak was detected in a part of the plant that processes contaminated water.

“We estimate about 5.5 tons (5,500 liters) of water leaked” on Wednesday morning, but there was “no significant change” at radioactivity monitoring posts around the power plant, a TEPCO spokesman said, according to the news agency AFPThursday (8/2/2024).

However, TEPCO plans to remove soil around areas that may have been contaminated, the spokesperson said, without providing specific details about the location of the water leak.

The leak on Wednesday (7/2) local time occurred at a facility that processes water before most of the radioactive elements are filtered out at a different sophisticated facility known as ALPS.

TEPCO said the leak from the vent was discovered by a worker who was cleaning the vent before operating the facility.

“The vents are supposed to be closed during cleaning, but this time they were open,” a TEPCO spokesman said.
