In Sudan people have taken to the streets en masse in protest against the army. Tens of thousands of people gathered in the capital Khartoum this afternoon. Demonstrations were also held in other cities.
Protesters marched in the capital to the presidential palace, where army chief General Burhan often resides. They called on him to resign, to which the army responded with tear gas and flash grenades.
Mass protests in 2019 led to the end of the 30-year rule of Sudanese dictator Omar al-Bashir. Until recently, the military and civilian groups shared power in a transitional government. The military should have handed power over to a civilian government last month, which would pave the way for new elections in 2023.
