A wave of massive pollution swept over one of the most popular cities in Romania. The reason that the specialists cite is the heating systems being requested to the maximum during these frosty days.

In the last two days, the sensors of an air monitoring platform in Sibiu registered values far above the maximum limit allowed in many neighborhoods of the city. Specialists believe that the heating systems used at full capacity during this period due to the very low temperatures are to blame.
“We cannot say that there is a massive increase in a certain neighborhood, compared to other areas of Sibiu. On the contrary, the situation is quite homogeneous. Basically, being cold outside, people burn what they can and warm themselves with what they can.
Apartment central heating, stoves, chimneys, all work at full capacity. It is not exactly a first, we have encountered such episodes in previous years as well. We also follow the evolution of the air currents, the atmospheric pressure situation, and we can say that a kind of smog persists over the city due to the heating systems.

The pollution level in some places exceeds twice the permissible limit
The highest levels of pollution occur in the central area and the neighborhoods of Gușterita, Turnișor and Terezian. In some places, the recorded values are 116 µg/m3 out of the maximum allowed of 50 µg/m3.
From Wednesday, the temperatures in Sibiu will be extremely low and the frost will persist, so the quality of air breathed by Sibiu residents and tourists will also suffer.
