Thousands of migrants travel in a caravan through Mexico on their way to the United States. According to the AP news agency, the migrants include many families with young children.
According to international news agencies, this would involve 6,000 to 8,000 people. Most come from Central and South America, but also from the Caribbean, a witness told Reuters.
The migrants arrived in the southern Mexican town of Alvaro Obregón yesterday after traveling about 15 kilometers from the southern border town of Tapachula. They would spend the night in Alvaro Obregón and continue north the next morning.
‘Tired of waiting’
One of the migrants is Ysguel Jean, from Haiti. He told Reuters that he left his home country because of crime and corruption and because he wanted to care for his two daughters.
Jean said he had waited about three months in Tapachula for the necessary papers. When that didn’t yield anything, he decided to move on. “I’m tired of waiting in Tapachula, being hungry and not being able to earn a living.”:

Migrant Cristian Rivera also told the AP that he waited three to four months in Tapachula without receiving an answer. Rivera travels alone; he left his wife and child behind in his native Honduras. “Hopefully with this march things will change and we will get the permission we need to move north.”
10,000 arrests every day
This month, about 10,000 migrants were arrested every day at the U.S. southwestern border. Mexican President López Obrador said on Friday he wanted to work with the US on migration.
But he also urged the U.S. government to ease sanctions on the governments of Cuba and Venezuela and send more aid to developing countries in Latin America. Next week, US Secretary of State Blinken will come to Mexico City to make new agreements on combating migration.
