Chaos at Munich Airport: Due to a worldwide Lufthansa breakdown, there are currently massive flight cancellations in the domestic German area.

Munich Airport – Chaos at German airports, also in Munich: On Wednesday, February 15, thousands of passengers suffered delays and flight cancellations due to a global IT breakdown at Lufthansa. The computer systems for boarding, among other things, had not been operational since the morning. A spokeswoman in Frankfurt explained that they are working intensively on a solution. A crisis team met at the Lufthansa headquarters at the airport. As a result, an as yet unknown number of flights were delayed or cancelled. Passengers and planes were backed up in Munich and at Frankfurt Airport.

The passengers were also not allowed into the waiting machines by means of a tally sheet because, according to the staff, important information about the departure was missing. All domestic German flights were initially canceled and passengers were asked to switch to the train. A look at the current departure boards at Munich Airport shows that the situation is not quite as tense as in Frankfurt. Individual domestic German connections such as to Hamburg, Hanover or Bremen are shown as cancelled. International destinations do not seem to be affected late Wednesday morning (as of 11:15 a.m.) with a few exceptions.

Lufthansa chaos: Air traffic control blocks Frankfurt airport for landings – Munich still open

Arrivals in Munich are also affected, but the picture is similar to that of departures – only individual connections are marked as canceled here. How long the problem has existed is not yet clear on Wednesday morning. German air traffic control temporarily closed Frankfurt Airport for landings in the morning. This is to prevent the turnstile from filling up. The machines are diverted to other airports such as Nuremberg, Cologne or Düsseldorf. However, starts were still possible in Frankfurt. For the second Lufthansa hub in Munich, there was initially no blocking of air traffic control. In the case of longer-lasting problems, however, this is an option.
