The planned auction of the “World of the GDR” collection in Dresden has met with a great deal of interest in advance. “We felt a great deal of interest during the cataloging process, and people kept wanting to come in when we were setting it up,” said Stefan Günther from the auction house of the same name on Monday on the premises of the museum, which has been closed since June.
Dresden – On offer are around 70,000 individual items, combined into 940 bundles – from ten banana boxes with books or a 400-pack of records to 100 children’s plastic chamber pots in pink and light blue to a convenience store including a saleswoman doll or a pack of snap beans.
The total of 949 lots, including Lada and Saparoshez, can be viewed from Tuesday to Thursday or in the online catalogue. According to Günther, the starting price is 10 euros each, regardless of whether it is a pioneer scarf, a propaganda board or a rudder. “Everything that doesn’t go away is stored and returned to the owner.” There are already more than 100 registrations from Germany and abroad for the auction on Saturday, in which bidding can also take place via the Internet. A museum also got in touch and a dealer from Belgium announced “because of the vehicles”.
Retail entrepreneur Peter Simmel bought the collection of the then insolvent Radebeuler Museum in 2017, saved it from liquidation and presented it anew in Dresden. Due to the clearly declining number of visitors, he closed the “World of the GDR” and negotiations with potential buyers to take over the collection failed. dpa
