Fire violently enveloped a fuel tank in the port city of Sevastopol, Crimeawhich is now occupied Russia. Pro-Kremlin officials in the city suspect the massive fire was caused by drone strike.
As reported CNN and Al JazeeraOn Saturday (29/4/2023), the Kremlin-appointed Governor of Sevastopol Mikhail Razvozhayev reported that an area of 1,000 square meters was now covered in flames. There are no clear reports about casualties or the extent of the damage caused by the fire.
Razvozhayev said that initial suspicions indicated the fire was started by a drone strike. It is not known for certain who was responsible for the drone strike.
“A fuel tank caught fire… According to initial reports, a drone strike may have caused the fire,” Razvozhayev said in a statement, quoted by the news agency. TASS.
Razvozhayev further stated that the burning fuel tanks were in the Cossack Bay area. He added that a quick response team was working at the scene to put out the fire.
“This is a Class 4 fire. Information on the number of fatalities is being updated,” he added.
Video footage circulating on social media showed large flames engulfing fuel storage tanks and thick black smoke rising into the air.
